frequency of needle stick injuries & related factors in health care workers in kashan shahid beheshti hospital

background: needle stick accidents  are a serious health  risk  for blood-borne infections among health-care workers(hcws). objective: to determine the frequency of needle stick injuries (nsis)  among hcws. material & methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted in  behesti hospital  of kashan from september 2012 to march 2013. data were collected using  a questionnaire. result: needle stick  injury was occurred in 171 from 270 hcws (61.1%). of 171 hcws only 141 agree to enroll in this study. the most person 116 (82.3%) were female. the mean age was 29.7 ± 6. 6 year. the most needle stick were occurred in internal medicine ward personnel (23.4 %). needle of syringe was the most common device for nsi (51.8 %). blood sampling was the most activity for nsi  (28.4%). the most common injured organ was the second right hand finger (16.7%). conclusion: needle stick injuries among hcws in kashan is relatively high . education of  hcws about risk of occupational exposure   should be considered  as a  main goals of  hospital managers.
